Shortly after the 1979 revolution in Iran, many popular-cultural icons fled and left their home country behind indefinitely. This was due to drastic changes in what (and whom) is allowed to perform publicly. Especially for women, the right to sing and dance in public became more and more restricted. Googoosh, was one of the few icons who remained in Iran until 2000 though, of course, forbidden to perform. The Sun is Gone, explores the effects and emotional landscape of Googoosh in this time span; between a popular icon under lights and a singer in the shadows. We look into this similar experience as a collectively shared memory from the lockdowns of 2020-2022 that affected millions of people, especially performing artists. What happens to the spirit after being exposed to spotlights in front of an audience for years to then only being exposed to the lamp light in the living room? What happens to the body from preparing oneself as a public performer to one in some kind of a home-arrest? This experimental project brings together a digitally interactive light installation and performance to delve into the sensorial, visceral, and emotional aspects of dancing/singing in the dark.
