VORBRENNER is a contemporary art platform that promotes process-oriented work across all disciplines and genres. It offers short-term opportunities for collaboration for both collectives and individual artists in search of new insights and contemporary forms of expression that engage with an interdisciplinary concept of art and science. The focus is on a movement that is curious, experimental, researching, and developing, that welcomes the unfinished, the paradoxical, and the fragmentary. For exploratory trials of such nature, VORBRENNER provides the BRUX premises along with infrastructure and financial resources.

VORBRENNER has at its disposal an annual fund of EUR 40,000.00 for developing new projects (funded by the City of Innsbruck and the Province of Tyrol). This amount is available to the projects and their applicants and will be distributed among the various projects and receive funding in the form of money, space, technology, PR, and consultation.. The advisory board coordinates the distribution of funds and the available infrastructure for the various projects. The selected applicants are then supported in the project’s implementation, budgeting, coordination, administration, and documentation by VORBRENNER

Called for are interdisciplinary projects with an experimental approach that work within the intersections of architecture, visual arts, film, photography, literature, music, performance, theater, virtual/extended reality, and beyond. The projects can be performative, installative, or participatory, with no specific content requirements. The quote may be understood as an associative impulse.
Together, the VORBRENNER projects form an annual program implemented in the months of April, June, September, and October. During this period, the spaces of BRUX are available for project work and events. Alternatively, projects can also be implemented in public spaces in Innsbruck/Tirol.

FAQ

Your project

What kinds of projects may be submitted? + -

Projects whose requested budgets prove them to have economically feasible objectives. Projects that are experimental in nature and operate at the intersection of various artistic genres. Projects being conceived and implemented for the first time.

Are specific disciplines given precedence? + -

Called for are interdisciplinary projects with an experimental approach that work within the intersections of architecture, visual arts, film, photography, literature, music, performance, theater, virtual/extended reality, and beyond.

How many projects are submitted each year? + -

The past years have seen an average of 40-60 projects submitted annually.

When can I expect a confirmation or rejection? + -

No later than the End of June.

How are projects selected? + -

The submitted projects are selected by the VORBRENNER advisory board during a two-day jury session in early July. The board consists of individuals from various disciplines. Projects that operate at the intersection of artistic genres and experiment with contemporary art formats are preferred. Altogether, the selected projects culminate in an annual program that takes place over a total period of four months.

What is required of me as a participant in the VORBRENNER annual program? + -

(At least) one public event must take place as part of the project. For public events, the project owner must be present on-site. Appropriate images and text material must be provided to us in order to advertise via the BRUX and VORBRENNER channels.

Do I have to promote the event myself, or will VORBRENNER/BRUX take care of the entire promotion? + -

VORBRENNER projects are responsible for promoting their own events by creating and financing their own flyers or posters. However, VORBRENNER and BRUX offer a certain amount of promotion. VORBRENNER promotes the annual program through a booklet published in March, while the projects are promoted on their respective websites, social media accounts, and in the monthly BRUX program booklet and newsletter.

My project was selected for VORBRENNER. What happens next? + -

VORBRENNER receives annually 20,000 Euros each from the City of Innsbruck and the State of Tyrol. All of this funding is allocated towards the projects. The VORBRENNER advisory board is responsible for selecting the projects included in the program for the upcoming year as part of the call for submissions. Once the projects have been selected, they are finalized with the VORBRENNER management. The final accounting must match the original cost calculation provided during submission and cannot exceed the approved funding amount.

Space

How long may the spaces in BRUX be used for? + -

The duration of usage is determined by the program overall and the individual projects. In recent years, the spaces have been used for periods of one to four weeks. The premises are versatile, serving not only as a venue but also as a space for experimentation, a laboratory, a workshop, and more.

Which spaces may be used for the projects? + -

The theater comprises two rooms – a black room measuring 235 m², particularly suited for larger projects, and a white room measuring 145 m². Both rooms are versatile since neither has a permanently installed stage or audience seating. Drilling holes in the walls, ceiling, or floor of either room is strictly prohibited. Specific spatial plans should be discussed directly. Alternatively, projects can also be realized in public spaces.

What technical infrastructure is available for the projects? + -

Two in-house technicians are available to assist with projects for a specified number of hours. The projects can use the available infrastructure, including up to 60 spotlights, a projector, a PA system, a 5.1 sound system, microphones, and more. BRUX has custom-made stage elements specifically designed for the venue, which can be used to construct either a raised stage or audience seating. These elements can also be adapted to other setups, such as tables and podiums.

Financing

What is the average amount of funding that is typically allocated to projects? + -

VORBRENNER has an annual budget of 40,000 Euros. There is no limit to the funding amount that can be allocated to a particular project, but it should be kept in mind that VORBRENNER is a yearly program, and multiple projects are selected to be completed in four months. In recent years, around eight to nine projects have been chosen each year.

Can VORBRENNER also co-finance a project? + -

Partial financing is possible. However, seeking additional project funding from the City of Innsbruck or the State of Tyrol is not feasible since both entities already provide funds to VORBRENNER.

Can admission fees be claimed as income? + -

No. Admission to all VORBRENNER events must be free of charge.

Are there options for accommodation? + -

VORBRENNER does not have the facilities to provide lodging. Therefore, the project owner is responsible for arranging their own accommodation, which should be included in the budget. In such cases, the VORBRENNER coordination can assist artists in finding a place to stay.
