Program

VORBRENNER is a contemporary art platform that promotes process-oriented work across all disciplines and genres. It offers short-term opportunities for collaboration for both collectives and individual artists in search of new insights and contemporary forms of expression that engage with an interdisziplinary concept of art and science. The focus is on a movement that is curious, experimental, researching, and developing, that welcomes the unfinished, the paradoxical, and the fragmentary. For exploratory trials of such nature, VORBRENNER provides the BRUX premises along with infrastructure and financial resources.

An Almanac of Cold

Eline Kersten, Hans Gurstad-Nilsson, Lindsey Nicholson
11.-26.04.2025
Installation
BRUX / Freies Theater Innsbruck

An Almanac of Cold explores the intricate relationship between glaciers' bodies of water and humans' watery bodies. Starting from a thought of radical collectivity, this project forms a connection with the entity of a glacier through kinship, through what we share with it rather than what sets us apart. Just like a glacier, our human bodies hold collective and personal memories of the past. Parallel to the shapeshifting qualities of water, artist and glaciologist Lindsey Nicholson, composer Hans Gurstad-Nilsson and artist Eline Kersten create a continuously evolving immersive and collaborative installation that uses film, music, light, textile and glaciology. By navigating scientific and artistic forms of knowledge production, An Almanac of Cold searches for new ways of being with a glacier; being on a glacier; being in a glacier; being a glacier – and invites you to participate in this experiment.

Eline Kersten

Eline Kersten is a Dutch artist based in Switzerland. In her practice, she identifies, criticizes and makes visible multilayered narratives around changing and disappearing landscapes, both far away and close to home. To navigate the different dimensions of ecological degradation, she collaborates with practitioners from other domains. Her works span a variety of media including moving image, prints and sculptures.

Hans Gurstad-Nilsson

Hans Gurstad-Nilsson is a Swedish composer whose work revolves around music and sound as culturally charged phenomena. He is intrigued by how we relate to music and sound depending on the sonic environments we are being exposed to during our lifetime: i.e. the formation of musical memory. Hans has an earlier background as a professional archaeologist and addresses music as a multitemporal and multilayered experience where present and past are tightly intertwined.

Lindsey Nicholson

Lindsey Nicholson is an Innsbruck based artist and scientist. Alongside her scientific research on glaciers which connects innovative field measurements with state of the art numerical modeling, her artistic work is rooted in environmental philosophy and deploys multimedia approaches to explore the boundaries of scientific and artistic inquiry and how they generate meaning in society. Her works aim to convey a visceral understanding of how human activities are both rooted in and have impacts on our planetary home.
