Apis Sapiens

Bees and Humankind – Bees and humans share a long history, but bees have existed on Earth for much longer. The decline of bee populations began only with the emergence of Homo sapiens, or "wise human." Gradually, we are becoming more aware that bees do not depend on us; rather, we have always depended on them.
The Apis Sapiens field project explores the highly organized super-organism of the bee colony through music and choreography. Drawing on the extensive communication vocabulary of an individual within the colony, Apis Sapiens transforms the programmed movement patterns and the resulting acoustic space into expressions of individual creativity.
By the end of the process, a dance piece takes shape that seeks to explore how the behavior of the individual connects to that of the larger colony. Bees do not have ears; they perceive sound through their entire bodies. Sound is vibration. Vibration is communication. The unique acoustic properties of the beehive make this form of communication possible. The structure of the honeycombs, the materials used, the physiognomy of the bees, and the changing seasons all act as variables of an engaging sound composition.
