“Quaking Perception” is an interactive installation that unfolds in real time, exploring themes in different spheres. The installation unfolds in the following sequence: an old bathtub is filled with diluted clay, the color and consistency of mud pots. The clay erupts in response to seismic activity from a remote location in the Pacific Ocean.
The bathtub, an everyday object representing human scale, also symbolizes comfort, a moment of rest or escape from daily stress. Traditionally, sculpting clay is not often seen in exhibitions, as it is more commonly used to create works of art, often forming positive shapes. Once repurposed, the clay becomes an invisible material, embodying a direct connection to the distant event.
The decision to process data from a seismic station located on the opposite side of the globe, where human presence is virtually nonexistent, is also rooted in the idea of bringing hidden phenomena from the ocean’s depths to the surface and observing the impact of this performance on everyday life.
